Typescript compiled by Coe Hayne from the American Baptist Home Mission Society's Home Mission Record, December, 1849-January, 1852. Read was the first Baptist missionary to New Mexico, going out in 1849 and returning late in 1851. Letters (including some by his wife, Alzina A.J. Read) and journal excerpts describe the state of society and the economy of New Mexico, his educational labors in Santa Fe, and missionary tours in 1851.
